Description
Zachary Taylor Letter Signed "Z. Taylor." Also included are two Simon Cameron Autograph Letters Signed. Taylor's letter is one page, 7.75" x 10", Baton Rouge, Louisiana, February 8, 1848. Writing to supporter John B. Butler, a major stationed in Pittsburg during the 1848 presidential campaign, General Taylor declines to answer questions about his stance on the "Veto Power of the president." This letter is toned with smoothed folds. The general's signature is large and bold. In part:"I feel greatly obliged to you for the nerve it contained, but in reply to your remark, concerning the Veto Power of the president, I have to say that I do not see the necessity or propriety of going beyond the position I have long since assumed in relation to all political questions."
After President Polk refused to run for reelection in 1848, the Democrats nominated Lewis Cass and the Free Soil Party ran Martin Van Buren. The Whigs, though, chose "Old Rough and Ready," the hero of the Mexican War. Initially, his party affiliation was unclear, but eventually he surfaced as a Whig. As such, he adhered to their main policies, which included taking away the president's power to veto, except for unconstitutional laws. Major John B. Butler was an early supporter of Taylor as a presidential hopeful.
In two letters dated February 6 and February 8, 1848, Senator Simon Cameron of Philadelphia thanks Butler for "getting Genl. Taylor's picture" and writes that he had written "the old Genl. urging him to come [to Washington]."
Also included is a John Butler retained copy of a letter asking two colonels to "send by Telegraphic line the moment General Taylor has been nominated." Also, an A. W. Mitchell ALS, dated February 16, 1848, regarding Taylor's Whig nomination for president. All letters are toned.
