Description

Zachary Taylor Letter Signed "Z. Taylor." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", New Orleans, January 13, 1848, to Major John B. Butler, who served under General Zachary Taylor during the Mexican War. In this letter, General Taylor thanks the major, an early supporter of the general for president, for "the offer of your kind offices while in Washington." The future president has signed in bold ink. Toned with smoothed folds. In part:

"It is hardly necessary for me again to acknowledge to you my many obligations for the continual manifestations of good feeling towards me which I have received at your hands, but for the offer of your kind offices while in Washington I must specially thank you. It will be my good fortune I hope, not to need your assistance, but should I be mistaken in this, I shall not hesitate to call upon you."
