Zachary Taylor Letter Signed "Z. Taylor." One page, 8" x 9.75", Baton Rouge, Louisiana, May 14, 1848. Presidential-candidate Taylor declines campaign advice from Major John B. Butler. In part:"I have received your letter of the 19th inst. in which you advise a journey to Pittsburg & Baltimore and thence via. Charleston in return to the South. Such a measure is entirely out of the question much as I should desire not to disappoint the wishes of so many warm friends. I am truly indebted to you for your own earnest solicitations and advice, and for your very friendly favors generally."
Taylor's letter was in response to a letter Major Butler had written on April 19, 1848, in which Butler requested the general to "make a flying trip thru. the country, stopping for the briefest period, at Louisv-Cinat-Pgh. Hbg. Phild. and Baltimore - and after a short stay with your Brother at Baltimore; to return to N.O. via Charleston." Butler's retained copy of this letter is included.
Also included is the retained copy of another Butler letter (three pages) dated June 19, 1848, congratulating General Taylor "on the nomination. . . . It was not sought by the usual tricks of partizan diplomacy, nor affected by the intrigues of party machinations and machinery; It was the result of the generous feelings of respect, admiration and confidence of American people; and it was obtained against the combinations and active efforts of the leaders of both Whigs and Democrats. . . . The women are nearly all for you, and if they could vote, the matter would be decided by acclamation."
Major Butler had served under General Taylor during the Mexican War and was an early supporter of the general for president. Early in the campaign, the major wrote Taylor several letters offering campaign advice. All letters included here have smoothed folds.
