DescriptionWoodrow Wilson Typed Letter Signed "Woodrow Wilson." One page, 6" x 8.25" (sight), Washington, D.C.; August 3, 1916. In a letter addressed to George Rublee, Wilson implores him to withhold his resignation for as long as possible. It reads in full:
"It is with the most genuine regret that I receive your letter of August first, tendering your resignation as Federal Trade Commissioner, and I am going to ask if you will not be generous enough to withhold the resignation for the present, at any rate, and continue to serve on the Commission as long as it is possible. I know how highly the Commissioners value your counsel and cooperation, and I share, as I hope you know, their high estimate of your work and service. I hope that you will not insist upon the immediate acceptance of your resignation, which I am very loath indeed to accept." Matted and framed to the overall size of 12" x 14.5".
George Rublee (1868-1957) worked as a lawyer early in his career. He later became a political adviser to the likes of Governor Robert P. Bass, Theodore Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. He was highly involved in the establishment of the Federal Trade Commission and served on the commission from 1915-1917.
