Woodrow Wilson Typed Letter Signed as President. One page (with blank integral) on White House stationery, 7" x 8.75", Washington, D.C.; December 5, 1916. Letter from President Wilson to Don Niko Grekovich, chairperson of the Second Slavic National Congress, acknowledging the Congress's support: "May I not express to you and through you to the members of the Second Slavic National Congress, recently assembled in the City of Pittsburgh, my very profound appreciation of your telegram in their behalf on November twenty-ninth? Such sentiments of loyalty and national patriotism as your message expresses constitutes to my mind one of the best assurances of the future unity and influence of the great nation to which we should devote the very best that is in us." Signed, "Woodrow Wilson."In this letter, President Wilson responds to a telegram that Grekovich sent in which he conveyed the Second Slavic National Congress's praise, hailing him as a defender of the rights of small nations. The congress was comprised of Southern Slavs emigrants in North and South America who condemned Austro-Hungarian rule and advocated a South Slav state. The Second Slavic National Congress met in Pittsburgh on November 29 and 30, 1916, drawing 620 delegates who claimed to represent 500,000 South Slavs in the United States. The meeting was held to arouse public opinion on the side of South Slavs and show the United States that the movement was significant. Ex. R. Douglas Stuart.
Condition: Single horizontal mail fold, otherwise the letter is in fine condition. With dealer provenance from Forest H. Sweet.
