Description

Woodrow Wilson Draft of Speech, Four Minute Message Read to the American People on July 4, 1918. Two pages mounted side by side onto card stock, 14.75" x 11". Typescript, unsigned, with numerous emendations in pencil, including the insertion of eleven words in Wilson's hand. Delivered during the final months of World War I, Wilson's address touches on his motivation for entering the war: "Having suppressed self-government among its own people, by an organization maintained in part by falsehood and treachery, it has set out to impose its will upon its neighbors and upon us. One by one, it has compelled every civilized nation in the world either to forego its aspirations or to declare war in their defense. We find ourselves fighting again for our national existence..." A label is affixed at top center.

Together with a copy of the finished version as it appeared in Bulletin No. 33a issued by the Committee on Public Information Division of Four Minute Men. Printed by the Government Printing Office, on a bifolium measuring 16.75" x 11" unfolded. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Board on which original draft is mounted is fragile and has a chip along the left edge, well away from any text. Toning throughout, and some smudging to the soft lead pencil. Printed bulletin is toned, and has a tear which has been partially repaired with tape.
