Description

Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), President, Typed Letter Signed "Woodrow Wilson" as President, one page on White House letterhead, 7" x 9", Shadow Lawn, October 16, 1916 to journalist Cyrus Townsend Brady (1861-1920) thanking him for the enclosure of his letter of support published in The New York Times. Wilson writes: "My dear Mr. Brady: I know you are generous and do not want me to take the time to answer your letters, but you do such fine things and do them in such a big-hearted way that I must drop you a line to thank you for your letter of October eleventh and its enclosures. You certainly are a fine friend." Offered together with a retained and signed copy of Brady's original letter to Wilson, dated Yonkers, New York, October 11, 1916. The Times article was published on October 16, and was headlined "If the President is Defeated". Brady wrote in a fiery polemic that a defeat of Wilson by Charles Evans Hughes would in short "...give unbounded joy to every traitorous and disloyal hyphenate in the country..." Wilson narrowly won a second term in 1916 by stressing the fact that he had kept the nation out of war, and had managed to pressure the Germans to suspend unrestricted submarine warfare. This would not last of course, and after further attacks on American ships by German U-boats, Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany on April 2, 1917. Letter is overall quite clean with only minor soiling, overall fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
