    William Taft Autograph Letter Signed as chief justice on Supreme Court Letterhead, to West Virginia Senator Howard Sutherland. One and one-half pages, January 7, 1922, Washington, D.C., declining an invitation by "the Mason's Club" to give a speech. Fine.

    More Information:

    In part: "I greatly regret that it is impossible for me to accept the gracious invitation of the Chamber of Commerce and the Mason's Club of Hagerstown to address them on Washington's Birthday. My work is so absorbing and exacting that I have to give up speaking". Included is a telegram of the same date stating that Chief Justice Taft is unable to speak and that Vice President Coolidge has another engagement.
