    Description

William McKinley Photograph Signed "Wm McKinley Jr." This superb cabinet card features a chest length portrait of the twenty-fifth president in a black, double-breasted coat and tie. Below his signature, he has written: "Capt 23rd Ohio Vol & Bvt Mag U. S. V."

McKinley was just a young man at the outbreak of the Civil War. For his bravery at the Battle of Antietam, he was given a second lieutenant's commission and was transferred to the staff of Colonel (and fellow future president) Rutherford B. Hayes. He was given a promotion to captain in 1864 after the Battle of Opequon. He served on the staff of General George Crook before he received a brevet promotion to Major from President Lincoln. Very fine.
