President McKinley accepts the resignation of his Secretary of State

William McKinley Letter Signed as President. Two pages of a bifolium (now separated), 4.75" x 7,75", Washington, D.C.; April 26, 1898. A letter on Executive Mansion stationery to John Sherman, accepting his letter of resignation. His message reads, "Your letter of the 25th instant, tendering your resignation of the office of Secretary has been received and the resignation is accepted. I can not let this occasion pass without congratulating you upon your useful and distinguished career covering a period of nearly half a century in the public service..." Signed, "William McKinley".

John Sherman, brother of General William T. Sherman, began his career in politics as Whig; but his anti-slavery position led him to become a founding member of the Republican Party. In addition to serving multiple terms as congressional representative and senator from the state of Ohio, he was President Hayes' Secretary of the Treasury. Sherman's long career focused heavily on the financial well-being of the country. Among his many accomplishments, he was instrumental in reforming the nation's banking system during the Civil War, and after the war helped to rebuild U.S. credit abroad. Sherman advocated for a gold-backed currency, and was the primary proponent of the Antitrust Act named for him, as well as the Silver Purchase Act. He was 75 when retiring from McKinley's Cabinet.

Condition: With age-toning, and staining along left margins of both pages. Flattened mail folds, and multiple pin-holes at top. Ink has some fading, but remains very legible; McKinley's signature is bold. Mounting remnants on verso, with staining from adhesive along right margin of second page. Docketed in an unknown hand, possibly by Sherman, on verso, "Wm McKinley Prest Letter accepting resignation."

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
