Description
William McKinley Appointment Signed with Related Queen Victoria Document Signed. One partially printed page, 18 x 13 1/4 inches; City of Washington; January 10, 1898. McKinley appoints "William H. H. Graham, of Indiana... Consul of the United States of America at Winnipeg, Manitoba... and requests Her Britannic Majesty, Her Governors and Officers to permit the said... fully and peacefully to enjoy and exercise the said office, without giving or suffering to be given unto him, any molestation or trouble... I offering to do the same for all those who shall in like manner be recommended to me by Her Majesty." Signed, "William McKinley" as President and countersigned by John Sherman as Secretary of State. Blind embossed paper seal at lower left margin.Included is an order of decree (18 x 13 1/4 inches) from the Court of St. James on February 28, 1898, given in response to McKinley's appointment: "We having approved of this appointment according to the Commission before mentioned, Our Will and Pleasure are, and We hereby require that you do receive, countenance, and as there may be occasion, favourably assist him the said William H. H. Graham in the exercise of his Office..." Signed, "Victoria R" at top left margin and countersigned at lower margin by Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury.
Condition: Both with light offset toning, flattened folds, light wrinkling, and scattered stains on both sides. The seal on McKinley's appointment has some adhesive staining. Victoria's document has a small "D" stamped at lower left margin.
