William Howard Taft Autographed Letter Signed as President. Two pages of a bifolium now detached, 5.25" x 7", on White House letterhead. Dated "Thursday," to "Dear Hilles" concerning the introduction of Reverend John Wesley Hill: "This will introduce to Rev. John Wesley Hill D. D. Pastor Metropolitan Temple M. E. church N. Y. City. He is a warm political and personal friend of mine and I want you to know each other. He is a great preacher and speaker. He reached N. Y. from Ohio as others have done. Give him as much time as you have." Taft may be writing to his personal secretary Charles D. Hilles (1867-1949), who was an Ohio-born Republican politician and businessman in New York. He served as Assistant Secretary of the United States Treasury from 1909 until 1911, when he assumed the duties as President Taft's private secretary.
Condition: The letter has the usual folds, and light toning; with a few stray stains along left margin of the first page. Taft's signature has light ink smears, occurring at the time he signed the letter. Mounting remnants at top of both versos.
