Description

William Henry Harrison Signed Petition. DS "W.H. Harrison" likely as Senator, one page, 7.5" x 9.5", [n.p., n.d.]; a petition addressed to Secretary of the Navy Samuel Southard recommending "the appointment of a Midshipman in the Navy of the U.S. Nicholas Barney of Baltimore." Harrison signs beneath along with 15 other congressmen and senators, including William Leigh Brent, a Louisiana congressman; Nathaniel Silsbee, a senator from Massachusetts; and Thomas Worthington, a senator from Ohio. It is likely that Nicholas Barney was a son or other relative of John Barney, then Congressman from Maryland, who is not among the petitioners. This document is likely circa 1827, as Senator Silsbee did not arrive in Washington until December 1826 and Harrison was appointed Minister to Colombia in 1828. A few mounting remnants and archival repairs to verso, otherwise near fine.
