Description
William Henry Harrison Autograph Letter Signed "Willm. Henry Harrison." One page, 7.75" x 9.5", North Bend, [Ohio]; January 22, 1815. A letter to John McLean (1785-1861), jurist and politician from Ohio, in which Harrison discusses depositions he was assembling to clear his name in a congressional investigation. The letter reads in part: "In the packet of documents which I transmitted to you the Depositions of Genl. Gano & of Genl. Findlay & Mr. Burnet were omitted & by the neglect of some of my friends they were not prepared until a few days since. You will however have received them before this reaches you. On looking over the affidavit of Genl. Gano I find it so remarkably laconic that I have thought it proper to transmit the letters he wrote to me from Lower Sandusky urging the adoption of effectual measures to ensure a supply of provisions for his command-to save you trouble I have marked the passages which refer to this subject. If any further information or explanation should be necessary if you will do me the favor to inform me...Who is to be our next President?"The hero of the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813, General Harrison resigned from the U.S. Army in 1814 over disagreements with the current Secretary of War over the lack of coordination and effectiveness relating to the planned invasion of Canada. After the War of 1812 ended, Congress investigated Harrison's resignation and charges by his enemies that he had profited from hiring commissaries to supply provisions for his army. He collected depositions on his own behalf and Congress sided with Harrison, awarding him a gold medal for his services in the War of 1812. Harrison, a future president of the U.S., succeeded John McLean in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1816 and served until 1819.
The letter is accompanied by a typewritten transcription and an engraving of Harrison.
Condition: The letter has the usual folds, with weakening and small holes along the several folds. Separation along the bottom of the vertical fold and top horizontal fold; fragile.
