William Henry Harrison Autograph Document Signed "Willm Henry Harrison" as governor of the Indiana Territory. One page, 7.75" x 5.25", Vincennes [Indiana], September 5, 1811, to the Bank of Pennsylvania. He writes, in full:

"On the 30th of this Inst. (Sept. 1811) or as soon after as you may receive my Salary for the quarter ending on that day please to pay unto Edmund H. Taylor Esq. or his order two Hundred Dollars without further advice from him."

One year before, Tecumseh, a Shawnee warrior and leader of the so-called Tecumseh Confederacy, with 75 of his warriors met with Governor Harrison on the steps of his home. Tecumseh warned the governor that any further encroachment on Indian lands would result in widespread bloodshed. The council ended abruptly when the Shawnee leader accused Harrison of lying about the means of acquisition of the land in question and the "council" was disbanded with weapons drawn.

Over the next year, Indian raids were on the rise and by September, 1811, Harrison was ordered by Washington to punish the "savages." He set off with a combination of regular army and militia to strike at a camp near the Tippecanoe River led by Tecumseh's brother, known as The Prophet, which culminated in the victory at the Battle of Tippecanoe.

Smoothed folds with light ink bleed through from endorsements on the verso; else fine.
