William H. Taft Presidential Appointment Signed and countersigned by Secretary of War Jacob M. Dickinson appointing Edwin F. Gardner "Colonel on the retired list of the Army". One partially printed vellum page, 15" x 19", May 12, 1910, "City of Washington". Engraved with grand military vignettes and affixed with bright blue U. S. War Department seal. Folds. Fine.

More Information:

In part: "Edwin F. Gardner I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him Colonel on the retired list of the Army in the service of the United States". Edwin Gardner served as a private during the Civil War. After his graduation from Harvard with an M.D. in 1875, he served as a surgeon in the military until his appointment in 1904 to Deputy Surgeon General of the United States.
