Description

William H. Taft Photograph Inscribed and Signed While Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. 7.5" x 10.5" (sight), Washington; April 14, 1927. A black and white photograph of a seated Taft in business attire taken from the White House in 1931. Taft has inscribed the photo to Jefferson Myers, who served as commissioner of the United States Shipping Board from 1926 to 1936. He writes, in full:

''For Hon. Jefferson Meyers of the United States Shipping Board with my best wishes / Wm H Taft / Washington April 14th 1927."

A typed note affixed on the verso of the frame reads, "The wood in this frame was removed from the White House, 1931, at Washington, D.C., after being in use One Hundred and Thirty Years. Jefferson Myers, Commissioner, United States Shipping Board." It has been framed to the overall size of 9.5" x 12.5". Not examined outside of the frame.

Condition: Original paper backing to verso of frame has detached, affecting typed note, but is extant with the lot. Slight wear to frame. Small square of paper residue to glass at right margin.
