William H. Taft Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 10.5", New Haven, Connecticut, July 23, 1921. A letter thanking O.B. Stephenson of the Emerson Lyceum Bureau for his congratulations. Taft had been sworn in as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court on July 11, 1921. In full:

"Thank you for your congratulations. I am glad you think the people approve the appointment. So you must write me off your lists for good. I have gone in a monastery and there will be no more talking from me. To change the sex of the metaphor, I have taken in the veil. So don't approach me with any such suggestions. With best wishes, and with grateful appreciation of the opportunities you have given me and of the way in which you have lived up to the letter not only, but the spirit of our arrangements, believe me / Sincerely yours / Wm Taft."

Taft has the distinction of being the only person to serve both as president and as a Supreme Court chief justice. (His lifelong desire had been to be chief justice, not president.) He was appointed in 1921 and served as chief justice until his death in 1930. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Evenly toned throughout with usual mail folds, else fine.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
