Ulysses S. Grant Revenue Service Appointment Signed "U. S. Grant" as president. One partially-printed vellum page, 17" x 13", Washington, March 8, 1871, appointing William J. Herring "Third Lieutenant in the Revenue Service of the United States." Countersigned by Treasury Secretary George S. Boutwell. With large patriotic vignettes. Folds and minor unevenness to the vellum's toning. Grant's large signature has slightly faded.
