Ulysses S. Grant Military Appointment Signed "U. S. Grant". One vellum page, partially printed, 15.75" x 19.5", Washington D. C., April 14, 1869, with handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes and countersigned by John A. Rawlins as Secretary of War, appointing "Henry C. Bankhead . . . Brigadier General by Brevet...for the prompt, energetic, and meritorious service rendered by him during the present campaign against Indians and especially for the prompt relief of Colonel Forsyth's beleaguered party on the Republican in September 1868." With the blue seal of the War Office in the upper left. Folds, none of which affect the signatures. Fine.

The document refers to the Battle of Beecher Island which took place between the U. S. Army and members of the Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne tribes during the Indian Wars in present-day Colorado. Forsyth, with a small force, left Fort Wallace with orders to track down a group of Indians who had attacked a train of the Kansas Pacific Railroad. They camped by the river for the night (12 miles from four Indian camps) and were ambushed and pinned down the next morning. On the second day, Forsyth sent scouts back to Ft. Wallace to ask for reinforcements. Three groups came to the rescue, one of which was Bankhead and 100 men of the 5th Infantry.

Together with: Andrew Johnson Military Appointment with a stamped "Andrew Johnson" signature. One vellum page, partially printed, 15.25" x 19.25", Washington D. C., September 10, 1866, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton (also a stamped signature). The document appoints "Henry C. Bankhead...Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet...for gallant and meritorious services at the battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia". With the blue seal of the Department of War in the upper left corner. Folds and scattered, light foxing.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
