    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Endorsement Signed "U. S. Grant / General." One ruled page, 10" x 8", Washington, August 6, 1867. In his endorsement, the general approves a recommendation for a military reservation for Apache "Indian prisoners" at Camp Goodwin, Arizona Territory. When Grant received the recommendation, he signed it and forwarded it to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton on August 9, 1867. Grant's signature is large. The letters "an" of "Grant" bear some smudging. The paper contains some soiling, and some separations along the two folds have been lightly repaired on the reverse.

The recommendation begins with a written description of the military reservation at Camp Goodwin by Major G. Chapin, commander of the 14th Infantry, who describes it as "6 miles square" bounded on the north by the Gila River and "composed chiefly of bravely mesas, rising and falling at various altitudes and covered with stunted shrubs and different varieties of cacti. . . ." General McDowell forwarded Chapin's description with a recommendation for approval of the large reservation, which was needed because "of the necessity of keeping a large number of Indian prisoners upon it," to Major General Henry Halleck, "Commanding Mil. Div. Pacific," who approved, though he did not sign. General Edward Townsend, who later became Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, forwarded the recommendation on to General Grant. Camp Goodwin was built in 1864 as a camp for carrying out the Apache War of 1861-1872.
