    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." Two pages with integral blank, 8" x 10", on Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, Washington, May 22, 1868. Grant writes to three officers, Col. Walter B. Seates, Col. L.H. Whittlesey, and Capt. Jacob L. Foster, regarding an invitation to a "reunion of the 'Thirteenth Army Corps,'" in part: "I notice that the Corps has honored me by an honorary membership of their organization; I feel grateful to them and to all societies, not political, formed from the survivors of the brave army which bore the Union through the late conflict, triumphantly, when they associate my name with theirs. If it should be so that I can meet you on the occasion referred to it will afford me the greatest pleasure; but it is not likely to so happen." Docketed on page four. The letter has the usual folds and shows light ink ghosting from being folded with wet ink.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
