Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." Two pages with integral blank, 5" x 8", on Head-Quarters Armies of the United States letterhead, Washington, June 22, 1865. Addressed to S. Bishop & Co., Grant writes regarding a portrait of George Washington, in full: "I am just in receipt of the portrait of Washington beautifully executed by the arrangements of the words of the Declaration of Independence so as to make them give the portrait, which you have been kind enough to send me. I shall prize this very highly and will have it framed to hand down to my children as something to be revered." Folds with areas of very light soiling, else fine.

It is likely that the portrait to which Grant refers was the lithograph print of Calligraphic Portrait of Washington in Declaration of Independence by calligrapher W.H. Pratt, published in Davenport, Iowa, by H. Hogeboeck sometime around 1865. To create the portrait of the first president, the text of the Declaration was used in varying degrees of boldness.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
