Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." One page, 5" x 8", on Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, December 24, 1869. Addressed to the Reverend John Philip Newman, pastor of the Metropolitan Methodist Episcopal Church and chaplain of the U.S. Senate, Grant donates a sizable sum of money, in full: "Enclosed please find a check for $150 which I send to you for the benefit of the poor, and the schools for poor children in Washington and Georgetown. Please donate $100 for the former purpose and the remainder of the latter." Smoothed folds. Unevenly toned with areas of light staining.John Philip Newman (1826-1899) entered the ministry in 1848. He and President Grant became friends during their time in Washington. In 1873, Newman served as inspector of U.S. Consulates in Asia for a period of one and a half years on the appointment of Grant. Following his return to the U.S., Newman resumed his position at the Metropolitan Church. After a visit to California, Newman returned and ministered to his friend, Grant, who was dying of throat cancer. Upon the latter's death in 1885, Rev. Newman delivered the funeral oration.
