    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." One page, 7.5" x 10", on Head Quarters Armies of the United States letterhead, City Point [Virginia], March 28, 1865. Addressed to Maj. Gen. Godfrey Weitzel, Grant writes, in full: "Please send Mrs. M.S. McLean, now in Richmond, a pass to enter our lines and go North. Send it this evening by Flag of Truce to care of Gen. Longstreet." Smoothed folds. Light soiling at the right edge; small spot of foxing near the lower edge.

Just five days before he captured the Confederate capital at Richmond, Grant had this field pass telegrammed to Gen. Weitzel, who then directed it to Grant's old friend and West Point classmate, Gen. James Longstreet. The woman in question was Margaret Sumner McLean (1828-1905), a native of Michigan and the daughter of Union General Edwin V. Sumner (1797-1863), who was married to an officer in the Confederate Army, Lt. Col. Eugene E. McLean (1821-1906). When war began, Sumner, a Maryland native and graduate of West Point, resigned his commission and joined the Confederate cause. His wife, Margaret, moved with him to Richmond where she remained for the duration of the war. As the war was coming to its inevitable conclusion, however, Mrs. McLean, sought a way back to the safety of the North, culminating in this pass.
