    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant / Lt. Gen." One page of a bifolium, 5" x 8.25", West Point [New York], June 8, 1865. Two months after accepting the surrender of Lee at Appomattox, Grant penned this letter to his future secretary of state, Hamilton Fish, declining an invitation, in full: "My stay at West Point being limited to a few hours myself and staff will be unable to accept your kind invitation for Friday afternoon." Smoothed folds.

Just days after taking office as president, Grant appointed Fish his secretary of state, a position he would hold for both of Grant's terms in office, making him the longest serving of Grant's cabinet members.
