    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." One page, 7.5" x 9.75", Cairo [Illinois], October 7, 1861. Writing to Capt. Henry A. Walke, commander of the gunboat Tyler, newly commissioned Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant orders him to "proceed down the river to day with Gun boats Tyler & Lexington for the purpose of disconnecting the position of the enemy as far as practicable. It has been reported to me that the enemy have a marked battery some three miles above Columbus on the Kentucky shore. I do not credit the report but it would be advisable to advance cautiously." Dampstaining in the left half of the paper has led to some fading of the text and it is possible that the ink in the more heavily damaged areas has been restored. Paper loss at the upper left corner has been expertly restored.

One month later, Grant would lead his troops as a general for the first time at the Battle of Belmont. On November 6, Grant moved down river from Cairo to engage the Confederate fort at Columbus, but quickly learned that rebel troops had crossed the river into neighboring Belmont, Missouri. Grant landed his forces near Belmont and attacked, taking the Confederates completely unawares and destroying the camp. The rebels were able to reorganize and, with reinforcements from Columbus, counterattack, forcing Grant and his men to retreat back to his ships where they headed back upriver to Paducah, Kentucky.
