Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." Two pages, each page measures 5" x 7.75" (sight), Long Branch [New Jersey], July 9, 1872. Writing to the wife of Edwards Pierrepont, a supporter of Grant's and former justice on the New York Supreme Court whom he appointed as New York attorney in 1869, Grant asks if she cannot "find it convenient to pay Mrs. Grant and myself the long promised visit . . . Mrs. Grant and myself will be delighted to see you and will endeavor to make the time pass as pleasantly as possible. I should expect the Judge [Pierrepont] but I know he has sailed for Europe." Folds. Both pages are placed side-by-side and matted and framed to an overall size of 18.5" x 16.5".

Edwards Pierrepont (1817-1892) was an outspoken supporter of Grant's first during the 1868 election and for his reelection in 1872. For his loyalty, Grant appointed him U.S. Attorney General in 1875 and minister to Great Britain in 1876.
