Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant." One and one-quarter pages, 5" x 8", Philadelphia, May 4, 1865. Less than a month after he accepted Gen. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, Gen. Grant writes to "Jones," probably his old friend J. Russell Jones, formerly of Galena, Illinois, now a Chicago businessman and investment counselor, and later Pres. Grant's Minister Resident in Belgium. In full:

"As I now have a home where I expect my family to remain for a time, and to be with them occationally [sic], I want to collect what evidence I have of ownership of worldly goods. Will you be kind enough to send me, addressed to Mrs. Grant, my 5-20 bonds, Certificates of Horn rail-road stock and the sword which I believe you have. When you come East you must make your stay always at my house. I hope to pay a visit to Chicago and the West soon but cannot set the time now."

In 1862, Congress ordered the issue of 5-20 bonds, bonds that might be paid after five years, but must be paid in 20 years. They were issued to help fund the Civil War. It's interesting to note that General Grant owned some of these bonds. There are partial splits at three folds, including through the "S" of Grant's signature. Docketed on verso "Genl Grant/May 65" probably by Jones. Overall, fine condition.
