Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter Signed "U.S. Grant", one page, 7.75" x 9.75", on War Department letterhead, Washington City, May 16, 1866, to Commanding Officer, U.S. Troops, Petersburg, Virginia. The letter reads in full: "Sir: Please furnish the bearer of this, Mrs. Bross, the widow of Col. Bross late of the 29th Colored Volunteers, a detail of men, and all other facilities for returning the remains of her husband, and for shipping them to their destination. Very Respectfully, Your obt.svt.". Colonel John A. Bross was killed in action at Petersburg on July 30, 1864 while leading his celebrated black regiment during the infamous Battle of the Crater. It's interesting to note that General Grant was writing on behalf of Mrs. Bross nearly two years after her husband's death. With original pre-printed war department cover addressed in Grant's hand. Folds as expected. Fine condition.
