Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter of Recommendation Signed "U. S. Grant." One page, 7.5" x 9.75", on Head Quarters Armies of the United States letterhead, Washington, March 9, 1867. Writing to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, Grant states that he has the "honor to recommend, and earnestly ask, the appointment of Wm Craig Johnston . . . to the naval school." Johnston's grandfather was a general "who died in the service of his country during the Mexican War. He was a man of National reputation and as he has no sons to represent him in the national service," Grant believes "it would be an appointment, well bestowed." Unevenly toned along the edges. Wrinkling along the left edge from mounting, remnants of which are found on the verso. Folds.
