Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter of Introduction Signed "U. S. Grant." Two pages, 10" x 8", on Executive Mansion letterhead, Washington, January 12, 1871. Writing to his Secretary of the Treasury George S. Boutwell, President Grant introduces "Capt. Phelps, formerly of our Navy, and who rendered distinguished service during the rebellion. Capt. Phelps is now the representative of the Pacific Steam Ship line . . . and desires to see you in relation to the interests of the company." Folds are weakened and separating at the edges; separation repaired by clear tape.

The Captain Phelps mentioned in the letter is most likely Seth Ledyard Phelps (1824-1885), a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy commanding the USS Conestoga when the Civil War erupted. He served as part of Grant's invasion of Tennessee and fought with distinction at the Battle of Fort Henry in 1862. He resigned from the navy in 1864. Following his resignation, he became an agent for the Pacific Mail Steamship company and, later, served as minister to Peru under President Arthur.
