    Description

Ulysses S. Grant Autograph Letter of Introduction Signed "U. S. Grant" as commanding general of the United States Army. Two pages, 4.75" x 7.75" (sight), on Headquarters Armies of the United States letterhead, Washington, April 2, 1866, to C. A. Eastman of San Francisco, California introducing Colonel John Riggin, a member of Grant's staff during the war. He writes, in full:

"This will introduce to you Col. John Riggin formerly of St. Louis and during the first two years of the rebellion a member of my staff. Col. Riggin visits California for the first time and if you treat him well, or he likes the country as well as I did, he may settle among you. Attentions shown the Col will be appreciated by him and will be regarded as a personal favor to me. Of your old Pacific Coast acquaintances I know none here except Ingalls and myself. Ingalls is well but a confirmed old bachiler [sic] with but little hair left on his head. My cappelary [sic] appendage still holds on without much sprinkling of grey among it as yet. It will soon be time however to expect a change to come over it. My kind regards to Mrs. Eastman and all the little Eastmans. I believe I have heard as far along as young E the 2d."

Smoothed folds and light toning. Else fine. Matted and framed with the original transmittal envelope addressed in Grant's hand, 5.25" x 2.75" (sight), as well as a photograph and engraved portrait of Grant to an overall size of 22" x 18". What appears at left in the frame is a facsimile scan of the recto of the letter at right.
