Description

Two Typed Souvenir Letters Signed by Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Includes:

Richard Nixon Souvenir Resignation Letter Signed. One page, 7.25" x 9" (sight), Washington, D.C.; August 9, 1974. A typed souvenir copy of Nixon's resignation on mock White House stationery. It reads, in full: "Dear Mr. Secretary: I hereby resign the Office of the President of the United States." Boldly signed in blue ink by Nixon, the only U.S. President ever to resign from office, "Richard Nixon." [Together with]:

Gerald Ford Souvenir Nixon Pardon Letter Signed. One page, 6.25" x 9" (sight), no place; no date. Typed on mock White House stationery, it reads, in part:

"I, Gerald R. Ford, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in from the period of January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974."

Boldly signed in blue felt tip, "Gerald R. Ford." The original pardon was given on September 8, 1974, and in the immediate aftermath of the Watergate scandal, President Ford explained his rationale for not having the disgraced Nixon brought to trial.

The two letters are accompanied by two vignette engravings of Nixon and Ford. The items are handsomely matted and framed together to the overall size of 22.5" x 28.5". Not examined outside of the frame.

Condition: A few superficial nicks to frame.
