    Description

Thomas Jefferson Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed "Th. Jefferson" as the third president and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison. One partly-printed vellum page, 10.5" x 15.5", [Washington], October 27, 1804. Numbered "250," the passport allows "the Ship Thomas of New York, Andrew Gardner master or commander, of the burthen of Two Hundred Six of 88/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with Ten[?] men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation." Madison's signature is somewhat faded, though clear, but Jefferson's is bold. With maritime vignettes at the top of the document and a blind-embossed paper seal in the lower left corner; docketing on the verso. With smoothed folds and minor stains.
