    Description

    Thomas Jefferson Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed "Th. Jefferson" as the third president and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison. One partly-printed vellum page, 11" x 15.75", New York, July 28, 1804. Numbered "1. One," the passport allows "the Ship Alknomac, John Hildreth master or commander, of the burthen of Two Hundred, fifty eight & 21/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with Twenty One men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation." The two signatures on this impressive document are somewhat faded. With maritime vignettes at the top of the document and a blind-embossed paper seal in the bottom left corner; docketing on the verso. Wrinkled with some mat-burn around the edges. A thin sliver (less than one inch) has been removed from the lower left edge. Also included is a large colored engraving of Jefferson sitting at a desk, "G. Stuart Pinx/ H. Belt en stone/ Published by G. Endicott, 359 Broadway New York." The print, entitled "Thomas Jefferson/ 3d President of the United State," is foxed with some staining.
