    Description

    Thomas Jefferson Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed "Th. Jefferson" as the third president and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison. One partly printed vellum page, 11.75" x 17.5", New York, November 5, 1803. The passport allows "the Brig Swift of New York, Alexander Douglass master or commander, of the burthen of One Hundred Fifty-Six & 74/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with nine men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance." The two signatures on this impressive document are somewhat faded. With maritime vignettes and blind embossed seal in bottom left corner. This document, listed as number "171", has folds. Mounting tape along edges on verso.
