    Description

    Thomas Jefferson Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed "Th. Jefferson" as president and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison. One partly-printed vellum page, 10.5" x 15.5", [Washington], July 1, 1805. Numbered "199," the passport allows "the Ship Hermoine... Soloman Hopkins master or commander, of the burthen of Two Hundred Twenty Five of 83/95 tons or thereabouts, mounted with no guns, navigated with Nine men to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hindrance, seizure or molestation." Both Madison and Jefferson's signatures are bold. With maritime vignettes at the top of the document and a blind-embossed paper seal in the lower left corner; docketing on the verso. With smoothed folds with light toning and minor staining along the left edge.

    With two engraved portraits: the first, 8.25" x 10.75", of Thomas Jefferson with facsimile signature, and the second, 7.25" x 10.5", of James Madison.
