Thomas Jefferson. Printed document signed ("Th: Jefferson") as Secretary of State. 1 page (9.25 x 15 inches), March 2, 1791. Exhibits expected folds and slight toning.Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson formally acknowledges the tribute paid to the memory of Benjamin Franklin by the National Assembly of France.
The document reads in full: Congress of the United States: At the third session, Begun and held at the city of Philadelphia, on Monday the sixth of December, one thousand seven hundred and ninety. Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the President of the Unites States be requested to cause to be communicated to the National Assembly of France the peculiar sensibility of Congress to the tribute paid to the memory of Benjamin Franklin, by the enlightened and free representatives of a great nation, in their decree of the eleventh of June, one thousand seven hundred and ninety.
Printed with the names of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, Vice President John Adams, and President George Washington, Approved, March the second, 1791. Deposited among the Rolls in the Office of the Secretary of State. [signed] "Th. Jefferson" Secretary of State.
A true Renaissance man, Franklin served as the first United States Ambassador to France (1776-1785), where his reputation as a scientist, inventor, author, and statesman continued to grow and endured for decades after his death in Philadelphia, April 17, 1790. At this time, the French National Assembly went into mourning and eventually issued a decree on June 11, 1790, stating: "The National Assembly decree that their Members shall wear during three days,
mourning for Benjamin Franklin, to commence on Monday next - that the discourse pronounced on this occasion be printed, and that the President write to the American Congress in the name of the National Assembly."
