Description

Thomas Jefferson Military Appointment Signed "Th. Jefferson". One partially printed page on vellum, 15.25" x 9.25", Washington, D.C.; August 4, 1802. A document appointing "Alexander Veitch...Lieutenant of Infantry in the second Legion of the Militia of the District of Columbia." With a blind embossed paper seal. Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. On verso is an oath of service signed by Veitch and by Justice of the Peace, George Gilpin.

Condition: The document has been mounted on a thick board, so that the verso cannot be read, but the verso's text has been reproduced on the back of the board. Flattened folds and very gently toned. There are three holes punched along the left edge. Some separations at the folds, which are reinforced by the mounting board. Some minor edge chipping, and some areas that appear to have been repaired with contemporary strips of paper.
