Thomas Jefferson Handwritten Check Signed "Th: Jefferson" as secretary of state. One page, 6.75" x 2.5", on a "Bank of the United States" check, July 6, 1792. Jefferson orders the bank to "Pay to Messrs. Herbst & Lex or Bearer, sixty nine dollars and fifty cents of Dollars." Cross punch cancelled near lower edge. Light, uneven toning; Jefferson's signature is bold.

In 1792, Jefferson was in his second year as the first, and somewhat reluctant, United States secretary of state under President George Washington. He spent most of his time at odds with Alexander Hamilton, Washington's former aide-de-camp and current secretary of the treasury, and his pro-British, Federalist policies promoting the founding of banks and cities and a strong, centralized government. Jefferson was himself pro-French and a founder of the Democratic-Republicans who opposed the creation of banks and promoted an agrarian lifestyle. Jefferson ran unsuccessfully as the Republican candidate for the 1796 election, but was defeated by friend and Federalist, John Adams.
