Description

Thomas Jefferson Franking Signature on a Cover Addressed in His Hand. Folded down to 4.75" x 3.25". Signed in the upper left corner "Free / Th: Jefferson Pr. US." The panel is addressed in Jefferson's hand to "Mr. William W. Woodward / No. 52 S. 2d. street / Philadelphia." Stamped "Free" in the upper right corner with an additional circular postmark from Washington, May 9. The upper rim of the postmark touches Jefferson's signature, though it remains entirely legible. Remnant of a red wax seal on the verso.

William W. Woodward (circa 1770-1837) was a Philadelphia printer and bookseller specializing in religious works.

This Jefferson free frank, which includes his executive office designation, was from the Dr. John L. Robertson Collection of United States Free Franks and was sold during Siegel Auction Galleries' November 2004 sale.

Condition: Very light, uneven toning; small ink spot near the lower right corner.
