Description
Thomas Jefferson Four-Languages Ship's Passport Signed "Th. Jefferson" as President. One oversized partially-printed sheet, 20" x 16" (sight), New York, December 19, 1805. This passport, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch authorizes passage of "Charles Hathaway master or commander of the Brig called the Danube of the burthen 193 66/95 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New York bound for Trinidad (in Cuba) and laden with Beef, Pork, Lard, Butter, Flour, Wine, figs, Glassware, Hardware, Porter, one Gig, Cheese, Nankeens, Dry Goods, Hams & Lumber..."Countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State and David Gelston as Collector for the Port of New York. Paper seal of the United States affixed at the left with red wax seal affixed at bottom left. The document is matted and framed with images of Jefferson and Madison to the overall size of 42" x 23.5".
Condition: Flattened folds, with uneven moderate toning and a few areas of dampstaining. Light foxing in places. The larger wax seal is cracked with some material missing. There is a large repaired tear at the top right corner, which has a minimal effect on the printed text. Boldly signed by both Jefferson and Madison.
