Thomas Jefferson Autograph Document Signed as President. One-page, 7.25" x 5"; Washington, D.C.; April 5, 1802. A letter to John Barnes at Georgetown:Mr. Barnes

John Barnes was a Georgetown businessman with whom Jefferson had a long relationship. Etienne Le Maire was hired by President Jefferson to oversee the day-to-day management of the Executive Mansion. He began his tenure with Jefferson in August 1801 and remained with the president until the end of his second term in office. It is not clear what this business transaction entailed, but the letter contains Le Maire's signed notation in French that payment had been received from Barnes. An interesting letter showing Jefferson overseeing financial details of the Executive Mansion household.
Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds. Red staining, likely transfer from a previous matting; and a small hole in the middle of bottom quarter of the letter that does not affect text. Also, a tiny tear at top not affecting any text. Mounting remnants on verso including tape along one edge and two small bits of tape at top. Together with an engraving of Jefferson.
