Description
Thomas Jefferson Appointment Signed "Th. Jefferson". One partially printed page of vellum, 13" x 9.25" (sight), Washington, D.C.; November 18, 1803. A document appointing "Levett Harris of Pennsylvania... Consul of the United States of America, for port of St. Petersburg in Russia...I do hereby pray and request his Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Russia his Government and Officers to permit the said Levett Harris fully and peaceably to enjoy and exercise the said office...I offering to do the same for all those who shall in like manner be recommended to me by his Imperial Majesty." With a blind-embossed paper seal in lower left corner, and countersigned by James Madison as Secretary of State. The appointment is matted and framed along with a lithographic image of Jefferson to the overall size of 29.25" x 17.75".Harris' appointment as Russian consul was important because the United States had previously attempted and failed to send a consul to the Russian court. In late 1794, the U.S. government had appointment John Miller Russell as consul at St. Petersburg, but he was rejected by the Russian government because Russia did not recognize American independence.
Condition: Flattened folds. Very gently toned with two dots of ink. Overall bright appearance with a bold signature.
