    Description

Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed "Theodore Roosevelt." Two pages of a bifolium, 7.25" x 9"; Washington, D.C.; November 17, 1904. On White House letterhead addressed to John Allison written shortly after Roosevelt was elected for a second term as president. It reads, in part:

"...let me hasten at the outset to say that I can not prevent the discussions you deprecate in Congress and in the press. Governor Vardaman, John Sharp Williams, Senator Carmack, and the various newspapers which have uttered in their columns the same sentiments that these gentlemen have uttered on the stump, are responsible for a very dangerous ferment in the North. I do not have to say to you that it is not my policies which are to blame for the feeling to which these men I have mentioned give utterance. It is their own utterances which have inflamed that feeling which they professed only to express...I would like to see and hear more from the southern gentlemen in whom I believe, and to consult with them." With holographic edits by Roosevelt, and accompanied by the original transmittal envelope.

Condition: Usual mail folds, with light toning and soiling around edges. Transmittal cover has usual wear and soiling, with light toning. Overall very fine.
