    Description

Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10.5", on State of New York, Executive Chamber letterhead; Albany, New York; March 18, 1899. A typed letter to Joseph D. Smith of the F.A. Foster Company in New York City concerning Colorado men who served under him in the Rough Riders during the Spanish American War. In part: "I thank you for your allusions to myself, and I thank you doubly for the very interesting account of the way in which Sherman Bell, Wilson and the rest joined my regiment. I think I knew all of the Colorado men, and on the whole they averaged a little higher than any others in the regiment, although there were so few of them that I could not with justice compare them with those from States with large complements... Theodore Roosevelt."

Roosevelt wrote this letter when he was serving as Governor of New York, his term spanning 1898-1900. His election as governor was helped enormously by hero status as leader of the Rough Riders during the Spanish American War. When the war broke out, Roosevelt, then serving as secretary of the Navy and who had ardently supported American involvement with the Cuban war for independence, resigned his Navy post in early May 1898 to fight in the war. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: The letter has been backed with archival tissue to restore separations at the folds, and small areas of paper loss not affecting text. Light soiling, and traces of writing at bottom remain.
