Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", Assistant Secretary, Navy Department, letterhead; Washington, D.C.; May 12, 1898. A typed letter to S.P. Thrasher, New Haven, Connecticut, informing Thrasher that his Rough Rider regiment is over-enlisted: "I am very sorry to say that our regiment is already over enlisted, and we can't take another man. / With great regret, / Very truly yours, / T. Roosevelt."

The "Rough Riders" was a nickname given to the 1st Unites States Volunteer Cavalry, one of three such regiments raised for the Spanish-American War. Although Leonard Wood was appointed colonel of the regiment, it was his second-in-command, Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, former secretary of the Navy, who was considered the leader of the unit. Roosevelt, who had ardently supported American involvement with the Cuban war for independence, resigned his post as assistant secretary of the Navy in early May 1898 to fight in the war against Spain. This letter was written around the time Roosevelt resigned his post at the Navy Department. He and his Rough Riders went on to achieve fame in the Spanish American War. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Usual mail folds, light toning and creasing. Light soiling, and boasting a bold signature.
