Theodore Roosevelt. Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", on Office of Assistant Secretary, Navy Department letterhead, Washington, D.C.; March 14, 1898. Typed letter signed by Roosevelt to A. G. Wallihan, Cora, Wyoming, concerning the fake photographs that appeared in a book for which he wrote an introduction, probably Willihan's 1894 Hoofs, Claws and Antlers of the Rocky Mountains by the Camera.

In part: "I am much obliged for your letter, especially because it clears up something which I have always minded very much. I supposed you were responsible for allowing those fake pictures to get in, and I am delighted to know that you are not. I had felt very much put out by having written an introduction, and then finding that these fake pictures were put in. It caused me a great deal of annoyance. I should like to make public some little card from you stating the facts, and should then add some statement of my own... Theodore Roosevelt"

Allen Grant Wallihan (1859-1935) purchased a homestead in Wyoming where he and his wife operated a post office, roadhouse, and weather station in the town of Lay. During his time in Wyoming, he and his wife developed an interest in photography and acquired great skill in producing photographs of wild animals in their natural surroundings. Wallihan and his wife published several books of their photographs, two of which, Hoofs, Claws and Antlers of the Rocky Mountains by the Camera (Denver, Colorado: Frank S. Thayer, 1894) and Camera Shots at Big Game (New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1901), contained introductions written by their friend Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt's mention of the publisher Thayer in the letter implies that he was referring to the 1894 book.

Shortly after the date of this letter, Roosevelt resigned his post as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to organize the Rough Riders regiment for the Spanish American War. Obviously, he didn't allow his displeasure to disrupt his collaboration with Wallihan, as he wrote an introduction to a 1901 publication by Wallihan and his wife. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: With the usual mail folds, and two holographic edits in Roosevelt's hand. Earlier dealer's pricing in pencil at top left corner.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
