"I wish you to learn to bear arms, so that if the nation needs it you can be a soldier and fight..."

Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed. One page on his Oyster Bay imprinted letterhead, 6.5" x 7.5"; October 29, 1915. A letter to Steve Kwiathkowski with strong patriotic content: "The thing for you to do is to go on and work hard as a schoolboy. I am sure you are a first-class young American of just the right type. Then when you are a little older it will be time enough for you to decide what occupation you will take up. I wish you to learn to bear arms, so that if the nation needs it you can be a soldier and fight for your country; but you must also learn how to work and how to be a good citizen in time of peace." Signed in full: "Theodore Roosevelt."

World War I had begun in 1914, and Roosevelt was very public in his support of the Allies, and openly denounced what he believed to be the failures of President Wilson's foreign policy. He strongly urged that the U.S. join the war. This letter is likely in response to a letter from a student supporting Roosevelt's views. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Light creasing, soiling, and moderate wear. Tiny separations occurring at margins at horizontal fold. One holographic emendation. Roosevelt's signature has some fading, but remains very legible.
